Dreamy Creamy Garlic Rosemary Mashed Potatoes

The grocery store had a fantastic sale on a 5-pound bag of russet potatoes. One dollar! That bag of potatoes just had to come home with us. After making potato leek soup, there were still potatoes to be cooked. 

Mashed potatoes is an option. In the movie While You Were Sleeping I love the scene where the mother is so proud of her daughter Mary’s mashed potatoes. Someone at the dinner table says, “These mashed potatoes are so creamy.” The mother brags, “Mary mashed them.” I wonder what recipe she used?

Tyler Florence posted a method to make the creamiest mashed potatoes. Cook potatoes in milk? Never! Well, okay, I’ll try it. 

I riced the potatoes instead of mashing them. No real reason for ricing them instead of mashing, except I hadn’t used the ricer in a long time. Good enough reason?  

After mashing (or ricing) the potatoes you add back in the milk mixture that the potatoes were cooked in. Oh so creamy and yummy!

Garlicky Rosemary Mashed Potatoes

  • 3 pounds of potatoes, cold, peeled, chopped
  • 1 to 2 cups of half and half - enough to just barely cover the potatoes (I used fat free half and half)
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of salted butter
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Few cloves of peeled garlic
  • Few sprigs each of sage, rosemary, and thyme
  • 3/4 to 1 teaspoon salt


  1. Wash, peel and chop potatoes.
  2. Put in a large pot with all ingredients.
  3. Cover the pot and allow to simmer on medium until the potatoes became fork tender, about 20 minutes.
  4. Drain the potatoes, collecting the rich liquid while discarding the herb stems.
  5. Mash or rice the potatoes, adding the liquid back in, mixing until velvety smooth.
  6. Salt and pepper to taste.


Next time I make these mashed potatoes, I will add more garlic. The garlic flavor of the original recipe is good, but for a more robust garlic flavor more than a few cloves need to be added to the pot.

I made a simple light gravy to pour over the mashed potatoes, although you don’t really need gravy. These mashed potatoes are so creamy and Christina made them.
