On my way to the gym this morning with the top down on the t-bird so I can dry my hair in the wind (cause that’s how you did it back in the day before personal hair dryers). Okay so I’ll admit, when I was about 16 I’d get in my step-dad’s Pontiac Bonneville, put the top down and drive around until my hair was dry. Then I’d come home and iron it out (with a real iron of course). Glad technology has come up with solutions to some of my hair challenges.
You might be wondering why I didn’t just blow my hair dry with my hair dryer today? My excuse is that my new trainer wanted to meet me at the gym at 8:00 am, which means leaving the house at 0’dark hundred to allow extra time for commuter traffic. Oh and I was running late.
Well after being retired for almost a year, I realized I’m not used to getting myself put together and out of the house quite as quickly as I used to. Yes, I get up earlier than most folks, but I like to sip my coffee, check out what my friends are doing on Facebook, review and rewrite a few blogs, take a nice brisk walk around the neighborhood… but not this morning.
I’m running around getting ready – it did take some time to pick out the workout clothes. After all, I was meeting a new trainer and wanted to at least start out looking good… because I knew by the end of the workout I would look like a bedraggled sweaty mess. So that took some time. Then there was the tennis shoe dilemma – which ones went best with the outfit. I know, I was spending way too much time on things that really didn’t matter.
Check the time, I have just enough to pop in the shower, grab a cup of coffee on the way out and make it. But wait, I can’t do a vigorous workout without anything to eat first. I know from experience that I get nauseous and dizzy when I don’t have breakfast or something in my stomach before working out. No time to sit and eat anything at home, and can’t spoon yogurt in my mouth while driving and blowing my hair dry in the car. I’m just not that talented at that type of multi-tasking. Don’t want to make toast for the road because then a whole other set of choices has to be made – what type of bread, what topping – peanut butter or hummus, etc.
So a smoothie was my best option.
One container of Greek yogurt and a half cup of fruit (cherries in this case).
Add about 1/4 cup of liquid or more if you want your smoothie thinner. I used some of this dragon fruit juice.
Add all ingredients to the blender.
Blend until smooth. If using frozen fruit the smoothie will be thicker and slightly frozen with a milk shake texture.
Okay so I took a sip before I took the picture. Sorry, I was hungry and in a hurry. 😉
If the smoothie isn’t thick enough for you, add a teaspoon of chia seeds. If you want to add greens, a small amount of spinach or kale are good options.
I never make the same smoothie twice, adding a variety of ingredients on-hand. Often I have a half frozen banana in the freezer which I add to about any flavor smoothie. Make this to suit your taste and fruit and veggie favorites.
Just in case you are wondering, workout went well and I lived to tell about it. And, I made future workout sessions for 10:00 am.
